The ARTS Rock! – a POPS Extras! Initiative

  benefiting Every Child's Voice, Inc.

an arts-based after school program for underserved children

The project has been designed as one of INCLUSION -   to bring into the traditional ARTS fold, music genres not typically considered a part of the ARTS community - rock, rhythm & blues and contemporary musicians and entertainers who have added so much to our CULTURAL SCENE over the past 50+ years! Many talented musicians skilled in these genres have shown a keen interest in arts in education – and are enthusiastic about this Initiative which allows them to perform while helping underserved children enrich their lives through music and art.  As the Initiative takes hold, a mentoring program will be a key component. The Initiative will include a series of concerts featuring a variety groups and soloists in an effort to heighten awareness and generate income for arts in education - all in wholesome, family-friendly venues!  We view this Initiative as an "emergence" -  where local, regional and national populations acknowledge the changing demographic and the "boomer generation’s" strategic and influential place in today’s society. Our ultimate goal is to stage a grand finale early in 2010 featuring some of the best rock, rhythm & blues, and contemporary groups and soloists residing in our area - and showcasing some of the well known and respected rock musicians who call Southwest Florida home. We don't want to overlook the many wonderful contemporary Christian bands who play for their own congregations and whom we envision joining this initiative, along with Big Bands. NOW is the ideal time to recognize and appreciate the incredible talent in our community and keep pace with this new era by providing entertainment to a huge appreciative audience while generating the awareness and income necessary to maintain and grow arts in education.

The ARTS Rock! supports EVERY CHILD'S VOICE, INC. and we welcome each of you to join with us in this effort.

ABOUT EVERY CHILD’S VOICE Every Child’s Voice, Inc. (ECV) was established to provide a safe after school haven for children ages 6 through 12 …A safe haven to offer them the necessary life skills to compete in a constantly evolving world.  A safe haven to provide a solid foundation in study habits, building of self-esteem and assisting our children in achieving their academic and life goals! The open door policy focuses upon young children predominantly in the minority area of Sarasota known as Newtown. Operating at the Robert Taylor Community Center located at 1845 34th Street in Sarasota, ECV offers homework assistance and tutoring, music instruction, dance lessons and theater coaching.  Our children’s choral group has been designed to teach teamwork, discipline and instilling a sense of pride. Music is also used to enhance the child’s math abilities – Dance is used as a form of exercise and to enhance coordination.  Our theater classes have been developed to focus on creative expression, allowing a child to act in a constructive, positive manner.   ECV was founded by filmmaker and child-advocate, Terry “Tbone” Rhodes, with the assistance of Judy Alexander of Every Child, Inc. and support from The Community Foundation of Sarasota County.  Prior to launching ECV, Mr. Rhodes worked with a number of community organizations including SCOPE, The Child Protection Center, G-Wiz, and the Economic Development Corporation.  Technical assistance for the project has been provided by Deidre Reigel, the Director of the Sarasota Choral Society, Gino Norman who has worked as an actor and stage manager for a number of productions throughout Sarasota County, and many others. This project would not be possible without the generosity of Carl East, Director of the Robert Taylor Community Center, for providing a home for ECV.  OUR GOAL We believe the only way to predict a child’s future is to help create it!  The program goal is to help these children to discover and cultivate their unique hidden talents, thereby enabling them to succeed in whatever they endeavor to accomplish! Our long-term goal is to continue our arts-based program as a Charter School where children and their parents and guardians commit to a six-day school week until they are college-bound, and to provide scholarships for college tuition for all children who complete their commitment.  Our intention is to create a group of talented young men and women who are well-rounded and well spoken … who value teamwork as much as individual achievement and who contribute positively to their community and to the world. Given sufficient resources, Every Child’s Voice, Inc. will be a model program replicated in many other communities!
